leavesFall is a time of renewal. While Spring is about rebirth; Autumn is about preparation. Just as the squirrels prepare for a long, cold winter— you must prepare for the long seasons ahead. This means getting back on track before “Feasting Season” is upon us. Starting with Halloween and straight through to Valentines day, there will be plenty of opportunities to overindulge. NOW is the time to get your eating, exercise and mindset firmly in place .

Here are 3 seasonal tips to get you, and keep you, in tip-top shape.

1. Take a good, hard look at the eating habits you acquired during the warm, summer months. Keep track of what you are eating by writing it down. At the end of the day, circle all the “little indulgences” you could probably live without. Work on cutting out one unhealthy snack from your diet each week. Throw out any Summer snacks that are sitting in the pantry waiting to be eaten.  If necessary, join a weight loss class or see a nutritionist to get you eating “clean” again.

2. Get on the scale. Here is a case where ignorance is not bliss. Do you like what you see? Do like how you feel? How your clothes fit? If not, know exactly where you want to be. Do you want to be ten pounds lighter? Do you want to lose three inches off of your waist? Then get on it! Have a goal and a solid plan.

3. Reassess your fitness regimen for the Fall. Have you been slacking through the hot, humid weather? If so, now is the time to pick up the pace again. Create an exercise plan to get you to the New Year. Join a new class, pick-up a Fall sport, run a race, check out Continuing Ed in your town. Aim to do some form of exercise six days a week. Get yourself back to your prior (pre-summer) fitness level—and then blast through it!

Remember, striving to be your personal best is always in season.
