It’s inevitable. No matter how clean you eat, how much you exercise, how aware you are — you will eventually hit a wall. That point where you feel you can’t go on. This is an emotional plateau, and every body gets there. You know, when it just feels like life isn’t fair. Why do you have to watch what you eat while everyone around you seems to be eating with abandon? Why do you have to think about food all the time? Why do you seem to gain a pound every time you eat a full bowl of pasta?
Well, I’m here to tell you this is all very normal. I’m also here to tell you that unless you are under 30, you will never again be able to eat whatever you want, as much as you want, whenever you want. Get it? No one can. Yes, life is not fair. However, this doesn’t mean you can never have your favorite foods ever again. Or, indulge in dessert once in a while. It does mean you have to be careful, you have to plan and you have to balance. If you eat out rarely; by all means, eat what you want. However, if you eat out 3 times a week, your choices will be very different. Not boring, just different. If you like to have dessert after every meal, well that has to end. But perhaps you can have dessert on the weekends, or twice a week. You see, you can’t keep eating the way you have been eating since you were twenty. Because, you’re not twenty and neither is your metabolism. Something’s gotta give. There has to be some sacrifice.
Take a look at what you eat on a weekly basis and try to zero in on foods that may be working against your goals. It could be the cup of nuts you are having every day or the 3 glasses of wine with dinner. Once you have narrowed in on the likely culprits, meticulously work on cutting back. Can you get by on 10 – 12 nuts a day? Can you live on one glass of wine? Making even small changes can have a big impact on your waistline over time.
And instead of thinking about how life isn’t fair, think about the energy you will gain and the pure joy of living and feeling healthy. You see, life is fair — you just have to work it a little.
