I had my first colonoscopy yesterday. For those of you who have been putting it off for reasons unknown, I am hear to tell you, it wasn’t that bad. This is coming from a person who gets queasy around all things hospital related. So here’s the low down.
First off, there is no reason to avoid this very important procedure. Colon cancer is quite curable, if caught in the early stages. Since there are no overt symptoms in the beginning, a colonoscopy is your best chance of early detection.
The most uncomfortable part of the procedure for me was not being able to eat consistently throughout the day. Fasting for 24 hours is essential. I could feel my energy waning pretty early on, but it did give me a chance to think about how many times I mindlessly want to pop things into my mouth.
As far as the laxative prep, it actually felt good to cleanse the inside of the body. Something we don’t do very often. It is as refreshing as cleaning the outside of the body after a long, sweaty day. Embrace this feeling of lightness, as you release toxins, cholesterol and estrogen from your system. A tough sell, I know. But trust me, it’s all in how you look at it.
The procedure itself was very quick. One moment you are awake, and the next you are waking up. It really is that simple. No residual discomfort, no nausea; just a long, sound nap when you get home.
So for those of you who have been avoiding the colonoscopy, call today. Remember, you are the keeper of your own body. Prevention is the key to a long, healthy life. If I can do it, so can you.
